What to Pack for a Spring Boat Trip: A Practical Guide

A boat trip around Ibiza and Formentera requires planning. Always, but even more so in spring. The weather is variable, and sea conditions can change quickly. Knowing what to bring on board is key to enjoying the experience comfortably and safely. Good preparation will make all the difference.

The first aspect to consider is clothing. It is advisable to dress in layers. A light t-shirt combined with a sweatshirt will allow us to adapt to temperature variations. A windbreaker, or a good waterproof jacket, will be essential. During the months of April and May (especially during the first half), weather conditions can change easily, particularly at sea. While sailing, it wouldn't be unusual for the temperature to drop. This is especially true on days marked by the Tramontana or Mistral, which are cold northern winds.

At the same time, spring brings the first hot days of the year. The sun can turn noon and the afternoon—which will already feel wonderfully long—into extremely pleasant moments. But if we are not prepared, it can also be torture. Therefore, sun protection is another essential element for any nautical outing in Ibiza and Formentera. Although the heat is much more bearable than in the middle of summer, constant exposure to the sun's rays will be intensified by the reflection off the water. Therefore, it is advisable to use a high-factor sunscreen, dark sunglasses with UV protection, and a cap or hat. This way, we will avoid sunburns and fatigue during the day. Especially when anchoring for a while in a cove or on an open beach, where the cliffs do not provide shade.

We must also take into account the footwear we will wear. Ideally, you should wear boat shoes or sneakers with light-colored, non-slip soles. This will improve safety on board and prevent damage to the deck. During moments of rest or when anchored, comfortable sandals also work very well, but you should always prioritize your stability when moving around the boat.

Although the water temperature is lower than in summer, packing a swimsuit in your backpack is a good decision if we want to enjoy the crystal-clear waters of Ibiza and Formentera. Or, for those who get cold easily, a wetsuit. If the sun is shining, we will greatly enjoy swimming and snorkeling in areas sheltered from the wind. For example, ses Illetes in the north of Formentera, or sa Torreta in s’Espalmador. Keeping in mind that we are not in the middle of summer, a couple of quick-drying towels will be very practical. Other useful items include a waterproof bag to protect personal belongings, a power bank for your mobile phone, and, if desired, basic snorkeling gear to make the most of the anchoring stops. In spring, water visibility is usually excellent, making diving a highly recommended activity.

We also cannot forget to regain our strength. Food and hydration are fundamental. We must carry enough water for the whole day. The stomach will also appreciate fresh fruit, nuts, light foods, or other easy-to-consume snacks before rounding off the gastronomic experience in chiringuitos (beach bars) or beach restaurants. In addition to the amenities offered by the boat, it can be a good idea to bring a cooler to keep drinks and food cold.

Finally, it is important to keep route planning in mind. At sea, atmospheric conditions are in charge. In Ibiza and Formentera, they are usually favorable during the spring months, but it is important to check the forecast and adapt the journey. In addition to the Mistral and the Tramontana, episodes of Levante wind can occur, which generates a bit more swell in certain areas of the Pityusic Islands. Carefully choosing a stretch of coast that remains sheltered will determine how much enjoyment we get out of the boat. Cala Salada, Cala Comte, Cala d’Hort, or the surroundings of es Vedrà offer very attractive landscapes and allow you to seek shelter depending on the wind direction.
